Rhinoplasty

The nose is actually a very complex structure, and more is involved in “a nose job” (rhinoplasty) than simply restructuring the appearance. For patients in the Annapolis area, Dr. Sandel will discuss with you the structure of the nose, the bones and cartilage and its relationship to the sinus cavities. He will discuss what realistic expectations he can offer you, along with the possible consideration of other surgeries, such as chin implants, which might further enhance your appearance.

Specific surgical techniques

Dr. Sandel makes incisions inside the nose to expose the bone and cartilage support system. It might be necessary for him to make an incision in the skin that separates the nostrils. Next comes the actual reshaping of the nose—removing, adding to or rearranging the structure.

Next, the tissues are reshaped over the new framework. The incisions are closed, and a splint on the outside of the nose may be applied to help retain the newly shaped nose.  The splint will remain in place for 1 week.  Dr. Sandel also uses techniques that do not require the nose to be packed after surgery.

After the surgery

It is normal for your face to feel puffy just after surgery and through the following day. Bruising and minor swelling are also normal. Since Dr. Sandel will use absorbable sutures, none need to be removed unless you have a small incision between the nostrils. Dr. Sandel will also give you specific instructions on how to treat your nose and how to deal with discomfort and swelling.
