Skin Cancer and Skin Lesions - Cancer reconstruction

One of Dr. Sandel's areas of expertise, for which he has trained and practiced for many years, is facial reconstruction surgery. One area where he excels is reconstruction of facial lesions and skin cancer. With the incidence of skin cancer rising at an alarming rate, it is an advantage for residents in Annapolis/Baltimore/Washington, D.C. to have Dr. Sandel's expertise close at hand.

Dr. Sandel uses a variety of techniques to repair skin cancer lesions and pre-cancerous conditions. Often his procedure will require utilizing adjacent skin flaps or skin grafts. More extensive cancer repair may require using skin, tissue, muscle and/or bone from another area of the body. If you have been diagnosed with skin cancer lesions or a pre-cancerous skin condition, schedule a consultation with Dr. Sandel to discuss the options available and his recommendations.

Skin Cancer Diagnosis

Dr. Sandel understands the importance of early cancer detection and treatment. That is why we do our best to schedule patients who have concerns for skin cancer in a timely manner. Sometimes you can even be seen the same day! If you or your primary care physician has a question regarding a skin lesion, abnormal mole, or poor healing wound, ask to be sent to our office. We can diagnose and treat skin abnormalities and even help coordinate Mohs procedures with local dermatologists.

Mohs Surgery (Dermatology)

Many patients who are diagnosed with a skin cancer on the face, nose, eyelids, lips, or ears are referred (by their primary care physician) to local Annapolis dermatologists who perform Mohs surgery. Mohs surgery is a technique that allows skin cancers to be removed in micro-stages. A very small rim of tissue is removed and immediately looked at under the microscope. If cancer is shown to be present in that specimen then a little more tissue is removed. Thus, giving the smallest possible area that completely removes the cancer.

If the cancer defect is in a difficult place to close, then those patients are referred to facial plastic surgeons for repair. That is where we come in. The Sandel Center is proud to be a referral center for complex skin cancer reconstructions. We work with local dermatologists to help you achieve the most optimal outcome…both from the cancer resection to the reconstruction.
